Making scones the other morning was so cathartic; I oddly didn’t mind the absolute mess I made in my kitchen — flour spewed about the countertops, dough smeared on the faucet, smashed up raspberries everywhere.
Then something a bit more profound hit me: You can’t have that beautiful, Pinterest worthy photo without the mess in-between.
For so long, I’ve tried to stay safe by making sure everything around me seemed or felt perfect. I’ve done that with my own body, I’ve done it with my home, I’ve done it with my neurotic cleanliness, I’ve done it with how hard I am on myself — and the list goes on.
But let’s be real, something may seem perfect for a moment, however it’s always short lived. Isn’t life just cleaning up one mess for another mess to happen? Or accomplishing a goal and then another even bigger goal is right around the bend?
But that’s the beauty of it! Because if we are conscious, we don’t have to wait until everything is or seems perfect to enjoy it. We don’t have to wait for whatever we are aiming for to be fully present and fully thankful.
Life happens when you’re up to your elbows in flour.
Life happens in the becoming — the working on ourselves to the best of our ability, while also not being so damn hard on ourselves.
It’s NOT in the destination.
It’s not in the “after photo” or the weight loss goal.
It’s not in the engagement ring or the new house purchase.
It’s not in the bigger paycheck or smaller waist line, it’s not in the shopping spree or the trip to Barcelona.
And it’s definitely not in that final photo of a batch of scones.
It’s the everything in-between.
And we can rest in knowing we are doing our best, we will still fall short, messes will continue, but we are safe exactly where we are if we are present.
While all of the things I listed above are good, good things and should be celebrated — it’s about the process of GETTING there, enjoying each present moment & FULLY LIVING those moments along the way.
That’s the good stuff of life.
God has been showing me lately just how messy life is, how messy I am, and how I can’t keep waiting to enjoy the present moment.
Life is so much more amazing than we realize, and I think when we see it’s all happening in the mess that we can enjoy it so much more. It’s ALLLLLL a process. It’s all a journey. And I love how God uses things like baking scones to put some big things into perspective for me. 🤍✨
